In a state that has long been a Republican stronghold, Democratic candidate for the US Senate, James Talaricois is carrying the hopes of what once seemed unlikely: Texas turning blue. The former schoolteacher and Presbyterian seminarian has been doing well in polls against Republican Ken Paxton, the longtime state attorney general whose legal troubles have cast a shadow over his campaign.

US futures were mixed Tuesday ahead of the midterm elections. Oil prices rebounded from a sharp retreat to start the week after the United States conducted strikes on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz.
Voter frustration over the Iran war and the resulting rise in fuel prices have emerged as a key issue these midterms, which will serve as a referendum on US President Donald Trump's first two years back in office.
Iranian deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran reserved the right to defend itself following US attacks on Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz." The Islamic Republic of Iran retains the right to legitimate self-defence until the military aggression has been completely and permanently brought to an end," Gharibabadi said according to Iran's ISNA news agency.
Just hours before Americans headed to the polls on Tuesday morning, the Wall Street Journal reported that the US had launched limited strikes on the island. Unnamed officials then told WSJ, CNN and other major news outlets that the strikes had not been publicly declared to avoid the impression that Washington intended to resume major combat operations in Iran. The war in Iran is a major issue for many US voters.
Republicans are making a final push to avoid a predicted thumping in the US midterm elections, as Democrats seek to win control of Congress. Polls show the Republican to be the most unpopular president in modern US history.
A Democratic-controlled House of Representatives would impose the first real political constraints on President Donald Trump since he returned to office in 2025 – though wresting the Senate from the Republicans could be more challenging.
